Key differences between PET and PP Geotextiles

Both PET and PP geotextiles have good water permeability, compression resistance, and stability. However, there are differences in acid and alkali resistance between the two. geotextiles made of PP have good acid and alkali resistance. PET has good acid resistance, but its alkali resistance is not very good. PET materials are prone to decomposition due to chemical changes at low temperatures and strong alkalis or high temperatures and weak alkalis. This major difference determines their application.

In addition, the densities of PET and PP geomembranes differ. the density of the PET material is higher than that of water, while the density of the PP material is lower than that of water. This feature makes it easy to distinguish between pet and PP geotextiles. In addition, PP geotextiles are more expensive than PET geotextiles due to the differences in raw materials and properties.

SELECTION OF RAW MATERIALS FOR GEOTEXTILE PRODUCTION

What are the materials used in geotextiles?
The main raw materials for geotextiles are various polymers, including polypropylene, polyester, nylon, vinyl, mixed fibers and other raw materials. Polypropylene and polyester are the most commonly used materials for geotextiles. They both have the general characteristics of geotextiles, but there are some differences in their material properties. The details presented below, as well as the similarities and differences between the two PET and PP materials, will help you to understand them better and make an easy choice.

How To Choose Between PET And PP Materials?

The main differences between pet geotextiles and PP geotextiles have been discussed above. The customer can therefore choose between PP or PET geotextiles depending on the actual application.
If alkaline environments are encountered in applications such as chemical plants, mining or coastal dam engineering applications, we recommend that you use PP geotextiles. Due to the good acid and alkaline resistance of PP materials, PP geotextiles can be adapted to complex environments and have a long service life.
In other general projects, such as landfill projects or road construction, you can choose both PP geotextiles and PET geotextiles. To save money, you can choose PET filament geotextiles, which are the most cost-effective option for most engineering applications such as landfill and road construction.

In addition to the material, geotextiles can be divided into long-filament and short-filament products depending on the type of fibre. Filament fibre geotextiles are usually a little more expensive than filament geotextiles, but they offer more consistent performance.
The main indicator that distinguishes the thickness and tensile strength of a geotextile is its weight. Currently, most factories produce geotextiles in weights ranging from 100gsm to 1000gsm. The unit GSM is the weight of the geotextile per square metre, expressed in grams. The higher the gram weight of the geotextile and the thicker the geotextile, the better its tensile properties and the higher its resistance to permeation and tearing (e.g. CBR factor).
